Knute Rockne: A Portrait of a Notre Dame Legend
Published in Hardcover by Sports Publishing, Inc. (September, 1999)
Authors: Michael R. Steele and Mike Steele
Average review score:

A PLEASANT JOURNEY THROUGH ROCKNE'S LIFE
Michael Steele has been doing books on Notre Dame football for many years. Some, like Rockne: A Bio-Bibliography (1983) are very detailed, but most, especially this book, are more in the coffee table genre. But that's o.k. because Steele is modest about his books, and makes no special claims for them.

The photos in this book are excellent and not only include many of Rockne at various stages of his life, but also of his famous players. Steele also includes pictures of many important sites in Rockne's life, and even some diagrams of plays.

The text moves swiftly through the famous coach's life and career. On occasion, Steele repeats an old and questionable chestnut, but for the most part, he gives straight-forward game-by-game details. The final section of the book contains long interviews with a number of men who played for Rockne and/or were students at Notre Dame in the 1920s. Since all of these men have since died, the interviews are often poignant, even if they are more nostalgic than truly informative.

If you are looking for a deeply researched and footnoted biography of Knute Rockne, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a pleasant journey through the coach's life, take this trip with Michael Steele.

Last of the Breed
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (September, 1999)
Authors: Alexander Steele and Kevin Ryan
Average review score:

Enchanting and faithful to James Fenimore Cooper
From the book jacket, "Inspired by _The Last of the Mohicans_ by James Fenimore Cooper," _Last of the Breed_ is part of the "Adventures of Wishbone" series. Wishbone, a perky Jack Russell Terrier, connects modern-day events with books he remembers "reading." In this particular adventure Mr. Leon King, a local real estate developer in Wishbone's home town of Oakdale, wants to build a Tastee Oasis fast-food outlet on the edge of the town park. He gets permission to do so, by nefarious means, from the Oakdale Town Council. The moral of the book, from which Wishbone draws parallels to Cooper's novel, is that the land is important and progress (in the form of fast food outlets) isn't measured by paving over every available inch of landscape. What is especially impressive about Steele's treatment of _Mohicans_ is that he is truthful to the original. He does not gloss over the violence (he includes a throat-slashing and the Massacre at Fort William Henry), nor does he try to change the ending of Cooper's novel. Wishbone even says, "I had forgotten how sad the ending of this story is. Let me just take a moment..." before moving back to the "triumph" over Mr. Leon King. _Last of the Breed_, while certainly not a substitute for Cooper's _Last of the Mohicans_, is certainly a good primer for reading Cooper's novel. Moreover, it treats readers, both children and adults, to a throughly enjoyable ecofriendly story. Well done, Wishbone!

Which was worse - the scandal or the pain?
From the back cover:
Mercy Yeomans was regarded as a paragon of
virtue in the tiny village where she'd grown up. Then, one passion-filled night with Croft Latimer had altered her quiet existence irrevocably. Turfed out of her flat, spurned by her friends and rejected by her fiance, Mercy was too ashamed and hurt to think clearly. All she knew was that she had to flee her accusers - even if it meant escaping into the same strong male arms that had given her so much trouble-and so much pleasure...

Profitable Purchasing Strategies: A Manager's Guide for Improving Organizational Competitiveness Through the Skills of Purchasing
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (May, 1996)
Authors: Paul T. Steele and Brian Court
Average review score:

A purchasing plan from start to finish
This book provides a thorough view of purchasing strategies and strategic purchasing. It emphasizes the need for support from the top as well as established purchasing guidelines.

It's primary benefit comes from a thorough explanation of strategic purchasing. How to determine a need, determine the possibility of seclecting one (or more) suppliers to fill that need and how to use your position as a buyer to create the type of supplier that YOU need. It also highlights the need for "upstream" planning to avoid the pitfalls that often result from unplanned purchasing.

Ritos De Iniciacion: Tres Novelas Coras De Hispanomerica
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (January, 1986)
Authors: Grinor Rojo, Cynthia Steele, and Grbinor Rojo
Average review score:

good intro to spanish literature
I am currently reading this book for a Spanish class, and the novels are very entertaining. I found myself reading ahead just because the story was so compelling. Each is a story about a rite of passage, and the reading level is good for intermediate to advanced students. I have been studying Spanish for almost 8 years and had no difficulty with the language of the book. I highly recommend this for a quick, interesting read, possibly for brushing up on Spanish.

Rude Astronauts: Real and Imagined Stories
Published in Paperback by Old Earth Books (April, 1993)
Author: Allen M. Steele
Average review score:

Steele is our best hope for gritty sf.
Steele brings us a collection of shorts in Rude Astronauts, some of which are excellent. The besst of them are set in his alternate history where spaceflight was first acheived in WW2. These stories capture the feel of early genre hard sf, but stick to the reality of the science tightly. The remainder or the book is devoted to a trio of stories in the vein of 'Orbital Decay' and 'Lunar Descent', an optimistic nuts n' bolts near future. Though it as if the seventies never ended in these stories it adds a down to earth quality. An excellent read

The Scarlet Woman of Wall Street: Jay Gould, Jim Fisk, Cornelius Vanderbilt, the Erie Railway Wars, and the Birth of Wall Street
Published in Paperback by Grove Press (January, 1990)
Author: John Steele Gordon
Average review score:

very entertaining and informative
The presentation of colorful biographical background material and anecdote really makes a very dry subject come alive. One of the most interesting entities whose early life is sketched here is of NYC itself. If this book has any faults it is that is a little to close to its material, too dense, myopic and rambling. This can make teasing the thread of meaning out of it a bit painful at times. Anyway, it's a shmae this is out of print. It's really a great book, and of much wider interest than it's title would seem to impley.

A Suitable Husband (Larger Print, 513)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (September, 2001)

Was he willing to wed?
Jermaine Hargreaves' sister Edwina has claimed to have hurt her back in the home og a rich eligible bachelor. Of course Edwina then insists she can't be moved from the house. So the bachelor, Lukas Tavinor, demands that Jermaine come stay at his home in order to see to her sisters comfort. Jermaine very unhappily complies.
The book was a very fast and enjoyable read, but there was just something about the writing. There were alot of grammar corrections I would have made, but that could be because the book was written in England. I also thought that Jermaine fell in love with Lukas way too fast. She didn't even like the guy, but then couldn't think of anything else. Still it was pretty good.
